Grade 4 Math
Patterns & AlgebraThe grade fours are currently focusing on Patterns and Algebra. A solid understanding of patterns is an essential part of building a strong foundation for future math concepts that we will be covering this year. We are currently focusing on the following learning outcome:

This year, we are excited to continue piloting the JUMP Math program at Carseland School! JUMP Math is a national charity dedicated to improving mathematical literacy for students across the country, as well as internationally.
JUMP Math is based on the belief that EVERY child can be successful at mathematics. This belief, backed by research and recent discoveries, challenges the “Myth of Ability” (the myth that some people are born with mathematical talent and others do not have the ability to succeed). The JUMP Math approach emphasizes:
Another benefit of this program is how teacher instruction and student practice is structured and organized. Teachers give short mini-lessons (3-5 minutes), immediately followed by student practice for (3-5 minutes). This allows students to practice what they have learned, in a step-by-step manner, before they forget. This also allows time for teachers to formatively assess students understanding in order to ensure that no students are left behind. There are also bonus and extension questions for students who finish quickly. JUMP Math does an excellent job of breaking down mathematical concepts into sequential, scaffolded steps, which allow students to develop a deeper understanding of concepts. The JUMP Math program uses student workbooks. It is important to realize that these workbooks are incorporated into lessons through guided practice and discovery; these books are not intended to be used without instruction. You will notice some empty pages in your child’s workbook. Because we are starting the program part way through the school year, we will be skipping over some of the concepts that we have already covered in our class. If time permits, we may return to these sections for review throughout the year! In addition, you may notice that your child has not completed every question on the pages that we are working on - this is okay! JUMP Math is designed for differentiated instruction. Although all students are working on the same concepts, some students may require a bit more practice to master these concepts. Students, who already demonstrate mastery of the skill or concept, may be encouraged to skip some of the practice questions and challenge themselves with a bonus or extension question instead. I am so excited to continue this new approach to math at our school! For more information on JUMP Math, feel free to click HERE to visit their website.
